Taking the inbound marketing approach to email marketing means you're emailing people who have expressed an interest in your company and have given you their email address, you haven't purchased a list, and you're not spamming them with irrelevant information, but rather sharing valuable information they want to read. The key to succeeding with email marketing is knowing what to avoid.

  1. Don't use old lists: Keep your lists up to date, within the past 12 months, as lists expire at a rate of 25% per year.
  2. Don't purchase or rent lists: Grow your email lists the right way, with opt-ins and subscribe options to avoid getting blacklisted or marked for spam, not to mention giving your company a bad reputation as a spammer.
  3. Don't send the same email out to eveyone on your list: Segment your lists and provide relevant and targeted information to each segment, rather than sending the same email to everyone on your database.
  4. Don't ignore the statistics: Use analytics to gain valuable insight into the effectiveness of your email campaigns. Use this insight to get better at segmenting lists and providing relevant information to increase your click through rates and conversions.
  5. Don't send an email to someone who hasn't had a prior relationship with your company.
